Good posture is important. It helps us look better, feel confident, and have more energy. Having good posture means that you stand straight and tall while also remaining relaxed.

Here are a few suggestions to help you improve your posture.

  • Three Important Things to Remember:
  • Keep your head directly over your shoulders
  • Shoulders should be directly over your pelvis
  • Stand with weight mostly on the balls of your feet, not on your heels
  • In the beginning, your ‘correct’ posture may feel strange. It may even make you feel some discomfort but after a while, it will feel natural.

A Quick Tip:

A simple way of adjusting your posture throughout the day is to roll your shoulders up and back and leave them in that position every time you get up. Just like anything else, the more often you correct your posture, the easier it will become!

Reverse Arch Stretch

This is a stretch that you can do at any time to help reduce tension in your mid-back and neck. You can do this standing or while sitting at the front of your chair. As with any stretch, please take your time and listen to your body. If you feel any pain or discomfort, stop.

  • Lace your fingers behind your back and feel the palms touching each other. You will feel a stretch feeling in the front of your chest and shoulders.
  • Take a deep breath in and let the shoulders move further backward, letting your head fall back as well.
  • Now exhale all the air as you continue to extend backward.
  • Hold this position for a few deep breaths if possible.
  • To end the stretch, slowly bring your head back up to make sure you don’t strain your neck.

Do this stretch throughout the day to open up your chest and reduce muscle tension.

Making small changes to your posture will help you stand up straighter. Over time, you may notice that your muscles are less tense and that some of your little aches and pains start to disappear. Guess our mothers were right after all -about this anyway!
